What causes low mean platelet volume?

Mean platelet volume suggests poor thrombopoiesis, which can be seen in chronic hemorrhagic diseases, aplastic anemia, hypersplenism, and megaloblastic anemia. If platelets are normal, only this indicator is low, usually without important pathological significance, and generally does not require special treatment.
