What causes underarm blackening?

There are several possibilities for dark skin under the armpits. More commonly, prolonged local rubbing irritations can cause armpit pigmentation, which is a physiological darkening and generally does not require special treatment. If the skin under the armpits is dark, and the skin surface is rough, with many small bumps, and velvety in appearance, then it is acanthosis nigricans.
