Folliculitis is mainly caused by local infection of hair follicles with bacteria or fungi. Bacterial folliculitis is normally caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus albus and presents as red pimples and pustules on the skin with mild pain or itching, while fungal folliculitis is mainly caused by Malassezia infection. The clinical manifestations are similar to bacterial folliculitis, but microscopic examination of fungi can find pathogenic hyphae or spores. For bacterial folliculitis, you can use mupirocin, fusidic acid, compound polymyxin B, etc. to smear, if fungal folliculitis, then use ketoconazole, bifonazole, miconazole nitrate to smear.
