Congenital heart disease is not always detected during prenatal examination. A patent foramen ovale may exist in the fetus, but it may not be detected. If it does not completely close within one year of birth, it will develop into an atrial septal defect. If the ductus arteriosus does not close within one year of birth, it is a congenital heart disease. These conditions are usually difficult to detect during pregnancy.
