What are the causes of thrombocytopenia in children?

Committed to your well-being.
Thrombocytopenia in children may be caused by insufficient platelet production, excessive platelet destruction, and abnormal platelet distribution.
1. Insufficient platelet production
This condition may be caused by aplastic anemia, acute leukemia, or infection. These conditions and conditions can lead to decreased platelet production.
2. Excessive platelet destruction
Certain drugs, such as sulfa and chloramphenicol, may produce antiplatelet antibodies through the immune mechanism, resulting in thrombocytopenia. In addition, primary thrombocytopenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenia, and systemic lupus erythematosus can also cause thrombocytopenia.
3. Abnormal platelet distribution
If hypersplenism or splenomegaly occurs, platelets may remain in the spleen, resulting in decreased platelet count in the blood circulation.
If thrombocytopenia occurs in children, there may be symptoms of subcutaneous and mucosal bleeding. In this case, the cause should be identified and targeted treatment.
