Retinopathy of prematurity is mostly caused by proliferation of retinal fibrovascular tissue.
In the process of normal embryonic development, retinal blood vessels generally develop to the nasal margin at about 36 weeks and to the temporal margin at about 40 weeks. Retinopathy of prematurity mainly occurs in premature infants under 36 weeks of pregnancy, low weight and long-term oxygen inhalation. Such infants are not completely vascularized at birth. If exposed to high concentrations of oxygen, they can cause capillary endothelial damage and vascular occlusion, which can stimulate fibrovascular tissue proliferation and pull retina, thus causing the disease
