Retinopathy of prematurity is caused by immature retina and high concentration of oxygen after birth.
Normal fetus will reach nasal edge at about 36 weeks of pregnancy, and temporal edge at 40 weeks of pregnancy. Premature infants are not fully developed after birth. If exposed to high concentration of oxygen at this time, retinal capillary damage, vascular occlusion, and large proliferation of fibrous tissue may lead to retinal vascular dysplasia, causing retinopathy of prematurity. If there is no vascular retinal fibroangiomas proliferation, easy to cause retinal detachment or even blindness.
