Stomach distension and heartburn are considered to be caused by physiological factors, Helicobacter pylori infection, gastroesophageal reflux, etc., as follows:
1. Physiological factors
If the patient eats too much irritating food, such as pepper, onion, lemon, etc., it may stimulate the gastric mucosa and cause excessive gastric acid secretion, thus causing symptoms of stomach distension and heartburn.
2. Helicobacter pylori infection
If the patient has Helicobacter pylori infection, the pathogenic bacteria may cause damage to the gastric mucosa and stimulate excessive gastric acid secretion from parietal cells, causing stomach distension and heartburn.
3. Gastroesophageal reflux
refers to the reverse flow of gastric contents into the esophagus. Heartburn is its typical symptom, and it may also be accompanied by atypical symptoms such as stomach distension, belching and nausea.
