Herpes simplex virus can be transmitted by direct contact with the skin or mucous membranes of an infected person. For example, when kissing someone with cold sores or touching secretions from their herpes foci, the virus can be transmitted. This is one of the common routes of transmission. People who cough or sneeze may spread droplets containing the virus to their surroundings. If others inhale these droplets closely, they are at risk of infection. The virus can also be spread by touching contaminated items such as towels, cutlery, razors, etc. Healthy people can contract herpes simplex virus if they use these contaminated items.
