Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein synthesized by fetal liver cells and yolk sac in early embryo. AFP values are 17.5±11ng/ml at 10 weeks of gestation. 93± 57ng/ml at 20 weeks of gestation. AFP values are 164± 115ng/ml at 30 weeks of gestation. AFP values are 145± 123ng/ml at 40 weeks of gestation. AFP values decrease after birth. At 2 to 3 months of age, alpha-fetoprotein is replaced by albumin.
