Urinary weakness is more common in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). As the enlarged prostate compresses the urethra, it narrows the urethra, thus increasing the pressure of bladder contractions. In the early stages of the disease, drugs that inhibit BPH, such as finasteride, and drugs that inhibit urethral smooth muscle contractions, such as tamsulosin and terazosin, can be taken. As the disease progresses, the patient's residual urine in the bladder increases further, and urinary retention may occur. This condition can be surgically removed to remove the hyperplastic prostate and relieve the patient's symptoms of frequent urination, urgency, and urination.
