Does NT thickening have anything to do with folic acid?

Building bridges to better health.
NT thickening and folic acid are not related. Folic acid is taken orally at 3 months before pregnancy and 3 months after pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in fetuses. Fetal neural tube defects are mainly manifested as anencephaly, encephalocele, meningocele, spina bifida, cleft lip, cleft palate, etc. Folic acid deficiency can affect the closure of fetal neural tubes, so oral folic acid during pregnancy can prevent neural tube defects in fetuses. NT refers to the thickness of the transparent layer of the fetal neck observed by color Doppler ultrasound at 11-13 weeks plus 6 days of pregnancy. If NT is greater than 2.5mm, the risk of Down syndrome will be high, and further examination by Tang screen or amniotic fluid puncture is needed. Fetal neural tube defects and Down syndrome are not a class of diseases, so NT thickening has nothing to do with oral folic acid.
