The main causes of CPM include hyponatremia and its rapid correction, chronic alcoholism, malnutrition, etc.
1. Hyponatremia and its rapid correction of
hyponatremia, brain tissue is in a hypotonic state. If hypertonic saline is supplemented too quickly to correct hyponatremia, it will lead to rapid increase of plasma osmotic pressure, resulting in dehydration of brain tissue and destruction of blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier. Harmful substances penetrate the barrier and lead to demyelination.
2. Chronic alcoholism,
especially chronic alcoholism with malnutrition, is more prone to CPM.
3. Malnutrition
may increase the risk of CPM, especially when combined with chronic alcoholism.
