HFMD is caused by an enterovirus infection. It causes fever and skin blisters. Most HFMD patients recover within seven to ten days without complications. Very few children may develop complications such as viral meningitis, myocarditis, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, pulmonary hemorrhage, encephalomyelitis and acute flaccid paralysis.
