What are the causes of neonatal tetanus?

Neonatal tetanus is considered to be caused by unsterilized umbilical cord shears, or by infection with Clostridium tetani, or possibly by contact with human and animal faeces; it requires treatment in the neonatal department of a regular hospital and is treated by intramuscular tetanus passive immunization.
