What is the meaning of patent foramen ovale in neonatal atrial septum?

PFO is caused by abnormal embryonic development and usually closes spontaneously within one year of birth. If it does not close within one year, it is congenital heart disease and should be admitted for interventional closure or surgery to close the PFO.
