Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by enterovirus infection, of which coxsackie virus A16 and enterovirus 71 are more common. Chickenpox is caused by varicella-herpes zoster virus infection. Chickenpox rash is concentric distribution, more common on the trunk, less common on the palms and feet; hand, foot and mouth disease rash distribution is opposite to chickenpox rash distribution.
