Herpes simplex is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 infection. Genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 and, to a lesser extent, type 1 virus infection. Herpes zoster is caused by varicella-zoster virus infection. In the early stages of herpes, if only small blisters are present, acyclovir ointment can be applied externally twice a day. If the blister shows signs of infection and turns into pustules, erythromycin ointment or patopan ointment can be applied externally to control the infection.
