Is berberine an antibiotic?

Berberine, also known as berberine, is not an antibiotic. Berberine is an isoquinoline quaternary ammonium alkaloid extracted from plants such as coptis chinensis and phellodendron bark. Berberine has the effect of inhibiting tuberculosis, pneumonia, hemolytic streptococci and other bacteria. Berberine is commonly used in clinical treatment of bacterial gastroenteritis, dysentery and other digestive tract diseases. Berberine can be obtained artificially in addition to natural plant extracts. It is not produced by microbial fermentation, so it is not in the category of antibiotics, it belongs to chemicals.
