What is acute gouty arthritis?

Acute gouty arthritis is a common and sudden onset of arthritis, mainly caused by urate crystals deposited in the joints.

Abnormal uric acid metabolism is the key factor leading to acute gouty arthritis. When uric acid production in the body is excessive or excretion is reduced, urate deposits in the joints and surrounding tissues. Typical manifestations are joint pain, redness, and fever. It often starts in the first metatarsophalangeal joint, but can also affect other joints. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, blood uric acid levels, and joint fluid tests. During acute attacks, NSAIDs may be prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation. In remission period, drugs should be used to reduce uric acid, and lifestyle should be adjusted, such as low purine diet, moderate drinking water, weight control, etc.
