Characteristics of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer

Healing hearts, one patient at a time.
Gastric and duodenal ulcers are characterized by decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting, and abdominal pain.
1. Loss of appetite
Gastric and duodenal ulcers may cause indigestion and symptoms of loss of appetite.
2. Nausea and vomiting
Some patients may experience nausea and vomiting, mainly caused by stimulation of gastric or duodenal ulcers.
3. Abdominal pain
Gastric ulcers usually cause pain in the center or upper abdomen, while duodenal ulcers cause pain around the umbilicus or upper abdomen. Pain may be tingling, burning, or dull, and can last for minutes to hours. In addition, gastric ulcers usually present pain after meals, especially after eating more or more greasy foods. Conversely, duodenal ulcers usually present pain before meals or at night.
