How to distinguish gout from rheumatoid arthritis

Gout usually starts in the ankle, back of the foot, heel, etc. Rheumatoid arthritis mainly affects the proximal fingertip joints of the hand, often symmetrically, and also shows morning stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis affects two or more joints, while gout only shows one site. Gout develops quickly and can peak within 24 hours, while rheumatoid arthritis is a gradual process. It may initially show swelling of the joints and is less painful.
