Hysteroscopy is usually required when the IUD cannot be removed or when the IUD is embedded. Hysteroscopy is used to remove the IUD: the patient lies on the gynecological examination bed, then sterilizes the vulva, drapes, and uses a hysteroscope to insert the IUD into the uterus to check the position of the IUD. If the IUD is concealed, but there is no incarceration, the IUD can be removed through a curved forceps or a ring removal hook. If the IUD is incarcerated, further hysteroscopic electrotomy is necessary to remove the IUD. If some IUDs penetrate the uterus, laparoscopic, abdominal and uterine repair is necessary to remove the IUD.
