Bullae usually refer to bullae. Bullae are enlarged or fused alveoli that form air sacs. Bullae may occur as congenital abnormalities and in most cases do not require special treatment. However, sometimes bullae rupture and may cause spontaneous pneumothorax, which may require surgical removal to prevent pneumothorax recurrence.n Bullae may also be seen in patients with COPD emphysema. Bullae caused by COPD emphysema normally require treatment of COPD itself. If COPD, emphysema, bullae and spontaneous pneumothorax are associated, chest tube drainage is often required, and surgical treatment should also be considered.
