What causes mitral valve prolapse?

Mitral valve prolapse can be divided into primary mitral valve prolapse and secondary mitral valve prolapse, with different etiologies.

1. Primary mitral

valve prolapse is mainly related to degeneration of mitral valve. Due to expansion of sponge layer in valve, change of collagen structure, increase of proteolytic enzyme activity, decrease of tensile strength of mitral valve, leading to mitral valve prolapse into atrium.

2. Secondary mitral

valve prolapse is mainly related to long-term abnormality of mitral valve biomechanics. Due to cardiac structural changes, valve vegetation, papillary muscle fibrosis and other reasons, mitral valve prolapse into atrium is caused.
