What is kidney atrophy?

Kidney is a very important metabolic organ of human body. It produces urine and excretes waste products. When both kidneys show atrophy, kidney function may be affected. For patients with bilateral kidney atrophy, the cause of kidney atrophy should be investigated and treated. If both kidneys are only slightly atrophied and the kidney function is normal, only the primary cause should be treated. If both kidneys atrophied, and renal function can maintain mild abnormalities can not be treated. If renal atrophy caused serious renal function abnormalities or show uremia, regular hemodialysis treatment, conditions permit kidney transplantation can be performed.
