The effect of tetanus antitoxin injection is to neutralize tetanus spasticity toxin that may be present in the body, thus preventing tetanus spasticity toxin from combining with the corresponding nerve. If combined, it may present a generalized muscle spasticity, i.e. tetanus attack. This does not occur after tetanus antitoxin injection during its protective period. It is generally used after injury when there is a risk of infection with Clostridium tetani. Tetanus antitoxin is a tetanus immunoglobulin derived from equine serum. Its protective effect usually lasts about 10 days. If the risk of tetanus infection still exists for about a week after the injury, it can be injected again.
