What are the differences between chickenpox and herpes zoster?

Chickenpox and shingles are both caused by the same virus that causes varicella-shingles. Chickenpox is a self-limiting disease that occurs in preschool children and is a manifestation of the body's first infection with the virus. Shingles occurs in adults and is caused by antiviral treatment and long-term latent virus activation.
