Preterm birth may occur due to intrauterine infection or systemic infection. Multiple pregnancies and polyhydramnios can lead to excessive uterine dilation and preterm birth. Placental abnormalities, short cervix, and uterine abnormalities can increase the risk of preterm birth. Severe eclampsia, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and gestational diabetes can also lead to premature birth.
