A patent ductus arteriosus
is a congenital anomaly in children. If the ductus arteriosus is small, it does not cause clinical symptoms and is usually not serious. If the ductus arteriosus is large, it may cause growth retardation, rapid breathing, and chicken breasts at a very young age. If the ductus arteriosus is not closed and there is pulmonary hypertension, respiratory failure, heart failure, or Eisenmenger syndrome, the condition is serious.
