What is oral lichen planus?

Building bridges to better health.
Oral lichen planus is a common chronic inflammatory disease of oral mucosa.
Oral lichen planus may be related to immune factors, psychological factors, endocrine factors, infectious factors, microcirculation disorders, etc. The common symptoms include white or gray stripes, plaques, papules, etc. on the mucosa, which may be accompanied by congestion, erosion, ulcers, etc. Lesions can occur in any part of the oral mucosa, such as buccal mucosa, tongue, gums, etc. Patients may feel pain, burning, rough feeling and other discomfort.
In addition to clinical manifestations, histopathological examination is needed to confirm the diagnosis. In addition, other similar diseases such as leukoplakia and discoid lupus erythematosus should be ruled out.
Treatment methods include removal of local irritants, such as bad prostheses and dental calculus; local drug treatment, such as prednisone and retinoids prescribed by doctors; systemic treatment, such as tacrolimus and other immunomodulators; psychotherapy to help patients relieve mental stress; and physical therapy or surgery if necessary.
