What is hyaline membrane disease in neonates?

Neonatal hyaline membrane disease (HMD) is a condition that occurs shortly after birth, with breathing difficulties, expiratory groans and respiratory failure. It is more common in premature infants and is also known as neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. It is associated with maternal diabetes and gestational hypertension.
