What is the normal range of urine volume?

Normal urine volume in adults should be between 1000 and 2000 ml per day. If urine volume exceeds 3000 ml in 24 hours, it is called polyuria, which has a lot to do with excessive water intake, diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus. Adult urine volume less than 400 ml per 24 hours and less than 17 ml per hour is called oliguria, which can be divided into prerenal, renal and postrenal oliguria according to the cause. Prerenal oliguria occurs when the effective circulating blood volume is reduced for a variety of reasons, resulting in decreased glomerular filtration. Postrenal oliguria is generally caused by obstructive disease.
