Wernicke encephalopathy is characterized by cerebellar ataxia. Normal symptoms are mainly lower limbs and trunk, manifested as difficulty standing and walking; it can also be manifested as extraocular muscle paralysis, accompanied by optic disc edema, nystagmus, upper eyelid ptosis, etc.; it can also be manifested as lethargy, confusion, and memory loss. In addition, some patients may also show dyspnea, palpitations, chest distress, etc. Severe cases may present with local paralysis, convulsions, etc. The disease may gradually worsen if symptomatic treatment is not given. It normally causes complications such as peripheral nerve damage, hyperlactaemia, and alcoholic liver damage.
