Progestin is produced by the ovary, placenta and adrenal cortex in women. Progestin levels fluctuate with menstrual cycle changes. Follicular progesterone levels are extremely low and almost undetectable. After ovulation, ovarian corpus luteum produces a large amount of progesterone, and levels rise rapidly. Blood concentrations peak on the 6th to 8th day after the formation of luteinizing hormone peak in the middle period, and gradually decrease to follicular levels four days before menstruation. After pregnancy, serum progesterone levels will rise steadily with the increase of pregnancy. Therefore, progesterone levels in pregnancy should not exceed 90nmol/L.
