Neonatal congenital megacolon is caused by persistent spasm of the rectum or distal colon, resulting in acute intestinal obstruction, abdominal distension, nausea and vomiting, spasm of the internal rectal sphincter, and emptiness of the rectal ampulla. Some children may also induce complications such as colitis and intestinal perforation.
