What is myxedema?

Myxedematous features may be due to symptoms of hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a disease that causes patients to feel tired. A gland in the neck called the thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone, which controls the body's use and storage of energy. Hypothyroidism prevents the body from producing enough thyroid hormone. Hypopituitarism is when the pituitary gland is unable to produce the hormones it should. It can occur when the pituitary gland is damaged or when higher-level structures in the brain, such as the hypothalamus, show problems. Abnormal tissue masses that form on the pituitary gland can also damage the pituitary gland. Treatment to control abnormal tissue masses, such as surgery or radiation, can also damage the pituitary gland.
