Causes and symptoms of dry eye

The main causes of dry eye include tear film instability caused by abnormal quality and quantity of tear film. It
may be caused by eye inflammation, long-term use of eye drops containing preservatives, decreased sex hormone secretion and gland secretion caused by aging, changes in tear dynamics, environmental factors such as air-conditioned rooms and smoky environments. In addition, systemic diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and local eye diseases such as eyelid insufficiency and eyelid defects may also cause dry eye.
Symptoms of dry eye mainly include dry eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, burning sensation, itchy eyes, photophobia, blurred vision, eye soreness, and even eye pain. In severe cases, eye redness, congestion, keratinization, corneal epithelial exfoliation may occur. Long-term damage may lead to corneal scarring or even perforation, and affect vision.
