Reflux esophagitis may cause chest and back pain, but chest and back pain may also be caused by other factors.

The typical symptoms of reflux esophagitis patients are heartburn, manifested as burning sensation behind the sternum or under the xiphoid process. Reflux enters the esophagus, stimulating nerve endings and causing chest pain.
