Premature infants with ocular fundus diseases are mainly related to premature birth and oxygen inhalation.
1. Premature
normal fetus has retinal vascular development reaching nasal edge at about 36 weeks, and temporal edge at about 40 weeks. If the fetus is premature, its retinal vascular development is not mature, which will lead to ocular fundus diseases.
2. Oxygen inhalation
premature infants need oxygen to maintain effective respiratory morphology due to incomplete lung function. Long-term oxygen inhalation may lead to ocular fundus capillary endothelial damage, occlusion, etc., and then irritative fibrous tissue abnormal proliferation, resulting in ocular fundus diseases.
