Prolonged concomitant exotropia may result in refractive errors.
Concomitant exotropia is when one eye is normal and the other is exotropia, and the oblique angle of the strabismus is consistent in all directions. Refractive errors are when parallel light rays from the outside world do not focus properly on the macular region of the retina, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The eyes of concomitant exotropia patients can still be imaged normally, but there will be diplopia and confusion. Generally, there is no necessary connection with refractive error, but long-term strabismus may lead to refractive error.
