Common classification of esophageal diverticulum

Restoring health, one step at a time.
Esophageal diverticulum is classified clinically according to the site, structure and pathogenesis of esophageal diverticulum.
1. The site of occurrence is
divided into pharyngoesophageal diverticulum, middle esophageal diverticulum and supraphrenic diverticulum according to the site of esophageal diverticulum.
2. Structure
If esophageal diverticulum contains normal esophageal wall tissue, such as mucosa and muscularis, it is called true esophageal diverticulum.
3. Pathogenesis
Due to increased internal pressure of esophagus, esophageal diverticulum formed by mucosa protruding from weak muscularis is called bulging diverticulum. If scar occurs after injury of surrounding tissues of esophagus, scar pulls all layers of esophageal wall to form esophageal diverticulum, which is called traction diverticulum.
