A cervical biopsy is a biopsy of tissue taken from the upper part of the cervix and performed under a colposcope. Because the colposcope magnifies the upper part of the cervix 10 to 40 times, it can detect atypical epithelium and heterosexual blood vessels associated with cancer. A localized biopsy of suspected lesions can improve the diagnosis rate. Before doing this, acetic acid or iodine can be applied to the surface of the cervix to see that they do not change color. If the color does not change, the iodine test is negative. If the color changes, the iodine test is positive. Biopsies are normally taken from areas that do not change color or areas that are suspicious.
