How to treat lung bullae

The treatment of bullae should be tailored to the individual circumstances of the patient. Sometimes bullae are due to congenital abnormalities and most of these conditions do not require special treatment. Sometimes bullae may be due to COPD emphysema, which may require treatment for COPD. Smoking cessation, prevention of respiratory infections, and long-acting bronchodilators may be required to slow the progression of the disease. In addition, bullae in both lungs are sometimes peripheral and may be complicated by spontaneous pneumothorax. If spontaneous pneumothorax recurs, surgery is required. Removal of bullae helps prevent recurrence of pneumothorax.
