What is an olecranon fracture?

Olecranon fracture is one of the most common fractures in orthopedic trauma. The olecranon is located at the elbow joint. If the fracture is not obviously displaced, it can be treated conservatively. If the olecranon fracture is obviously displaced, it usually needs surgery. There are two types of surgery: tension band fixation and plate fixation. After olecranon fracture, traumatic arthritis of elbow joint may cause future pain and limited movement of elbow joint. In summary, most olecranon fractures require surgery. Aggressive treatment can prevent elbow stiffness and limited mobility.
