Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome is characterized by repeated manifestations of partial or complete upper airway obstruction during sleep, reduced or complete airflow resulting in hypoxia, increased carbon dioxide, and structural disturbances of sleep, thus causing daytime sleepiness and cardiovascular complications. Diagnostic criteria must meet criteria a or b plus criteria c. I. Excessive sleepiness without other explanation. II. Two or more of the following cannot be explained by other causes: a. Asphyxia or breathlessness during sleep. b. Repeated arousal during sleep. c. Sleep that fails to restore energy. d. Daytime fatigue. e. Impaired attention. III. Overnight monitoring confirms five or more obstructive respiratory events per hour during sleep, which may include obstructive apnea, hypopnea, or microarousal associated with respiratory effort.
