Barrett's esophagus is a type of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), in which stomach contents reflux into the duodenum, causing heartburn. According to current pathology, barrett's esophagus is at risk of cancer if the squamous epithelium at the lower esophagus is replaced by metaplastic columnar epithelium, known as barrett's esophagus. It is recommended that the patient needs active treatment, long-term treatment with proton pump inhibitors, regular reexamination, and surgical resection if atypical hyperplasia is found in the reexamination.
