What is high nitrite urine test?

A high level of nitrite in urine indicates a possible urinary tract infection. When an infection occurs, especially a urinary tract infection caused by Gram-negative bacteria, it reduces nitrates, metabolites of protein in urine, to nitrites. This is also combined with bladder irritation symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, and pain. If these irritation symptoms are present, combined with elevated nitrite levels, this indicates a lower urinary tract infection. If the patient has low back pain, fever, etc., and a urine test shows high levels of nitrite, it may be an upper urinary tract infection. If the urine stays in the bladder for less than four hours, it may be possible to check the urine even if a urinary tract infection has occurred. The nitrite level in the urine test may not be high.
