What does urea nitrogen mean?

Urea nitrogen is an end product of protein metabolism. Urea nitrogen is elevated when kidney function is checked. It can be seen in kidney diseases such as glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, renal failure. It can also be seen in large amounts of water loss, fluid loss, and in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, hyperthyroidism, and high protein diet.
