Meniscus is located between proximal tibia and distal femur. It is fibrocartilage, which is generally yellow-white and has certain elasticity and toughness. The structure of meniscus is semi-annular, with thick outer edge and thin inner edge. The upper edge is depressed and adapted to femoral condyle. The lower surface is flat and adapted to tibial plateau. It increases the contact area between tibia and femur, absorbs shock, increases lubrication and reduces friction. The meniscus is attached to the tibial plateau and is fixed to the tibial plateau by surrounding ligaments. There are two menisci in the knee joint, namely the medial meniscus and the lateral meniscus. The medial meniscus is C-shaped and the lateral meniscus is O-shaped. The anterior horns of the medial and lateral menisci are connected by interlaminar ligaments. Meniscus can only be touched on the lateral side of knee joint on the body surface, anterior horn and posterior horn of meniscus can not be touched, but tibia and femur can be squeezed to posterior horn and anterior horn when knee joint is extremely flexed and hyperextended. This anatomical feature can be used to examine the damage of meniscus body, anterior horn and posterior horn.
